Looking through the many sites that had 80s slang in them had me cracking up! I remember this speech was the common vernacular among the American teenager. I have caught myself saying some of these rad sayings again. Here are some of my favorites:
2. Eat My Shorts
This phrase was made popular by Judd Nelson in the movie, “The Breakfast Club.” It was used as a comeback. I heard this all the time in high school. Bart Simpson is the most recent example I have seen.
I found this really cool site called Like Totally 80s and they describe this saying as:
Relax, cool out, calm down. A favorite term for Valley Girls to use when faced with a negative reaction from their posse of friends or when someone is freaking out for no reason. “Take a chill pill, Denise, I’m sure he’ll call you back when he gets home from work.”
Another Valley Girl saying that means you are disgusted with something.
Example- Gag me with a spoon! That is the ugliest shirt I have ever seen!! =O
Surfers coined this phrase. It refers to riding in the tube, when a wave is perfectly formed.
Example- Big hair is cool, but a big bow in your big hair is totally tubular!!
6. Where’s The Beef?
When this Wendy’s commercial came out in 1984, everyone went around saying Where’s the Beef? Clara Peller made this saying a phenomenon.
Urban Dictionary says this about Rad:
Shortened form of the word radical, a 100% slang word from the 1980’s, used mostly in the past by people from Generation-X (people born in the late 60’s early 70’s) to describe something that’s cool.
Apparantly lots of teens today are starting to use it as well, most of them probably don’t even know that it is an 80’s slang word and if they do know, they probably are pretending that it’s something of their generation.
Ex. That’s a rad bike you’ve got.
Remember when these were called thongs??
Another great site, The Eighties Lexicon describes this Valley Girl saying as:
Something that is extremely gross. “Dude, this burger is grody to the max.”
It was made popular in the opening scene of the 1983 Valley Girl movie starring Nicolas Cage, Deborah Foreman, Elizabeth Daily, Cameron Dye, and Joyce Heiser.
This means What’s Up?
These are some of the sayings that made the 80s totally tubular! What are some of your favorite 80s sayings?
