Are you ready for another round of great movies from the 80s? Here are the top Box Office SMASHES and their ranking for the year, 1983.
1. Return of the Jedi (20th Century Fox) starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Ian McDiarmid, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew and Frank Oz. Science Fiction
This is my ALL TIME FAVE Star Wars movie!
2. Terms of Endearment (Paramount Pictures) starring Shirley MacLaine (she won the best actress Oscar for her role in this film, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson (best supporting actor Oscar for him), Danny DeVito, Jeff Daniels and John Lithgow. Drama
This movie won the Oscar for best picture.
3. Flashdance (Paramount Pictures) starring Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri. Romantic drama
This is an iconic 80s movie. Alex is a stong woman, but shows a very vulnerable side. The character is intriguing as well as the movie. Highly recommend this one.
4. Trading Places (Paramount Pictures) starring Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott and Jamie Lee Curtis. Comedy
If you want to belly laugh, this is the movie to see. Dan and Eddie make a great team and you will not be disappointed. Fun film!
5. War Games (MGM) starring Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, John Wood and Ally Sheedy. Science Fiction
I loved this movie as an 80s teen! It is a fun ride and yes, the teen gets to save the day. I won’t mention that the teen starts the problem…
6. Octopussy (MGM) starring Roger Moore, Maud Adams, Louis Jourdan, Steven Berkoff, Desmond Llewelyn and Kristina Wayborn. Spy-action
Roger Moore’s 6th James Bond film with a mildly suggestive title… HA!
7. Sudden Impact (Warner Bros. Pictures) starring Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke. Thriller
This is the 4th film in the Dirty Harry series. Do you remember the famous catchphrase?
8. Staying Alive (Paramount Pictures) starring John Travolta, Cynthia Rhodes and Finola Hughes. Drama
This is the sequel to Saturday Night Fever which came out in 1977. Who is the famous band that the title originates from?
9. Mr. Mom (20th Century Fox) starring Michael Keaton, Teri Garr, Jeffrey Tambor, Christopher Lloyd and Martin Mull. Comedy-drama
This is another movie that will have you in stitches. If you have ever wanted to see a man take on the role of mom, this is your movie! Hysterical!!
10. Risky Business (Warner Bros. Pictures) starring Tom Cruise, Rebecca De Mornay and Joe Pantoliano. Teen comedy-drama
This movie put Tom Cruise on the map. It is considered the best teen movie of the year and one of the top teen movies of all time.
11. National Lampoon’s Vacation (Warner Bros. Pictures) starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, Dana Barron, Randy Quaid and Imogene Coca. Comedy
Christmas Vacation is the best, but this film is an amusing and wild ride as well.
12. Superman III (Warner Bros. Pictures) starring Christopher Reeve, Richard Pryor, Jackie Cooper, Marc McClure, Annette O’Toole, Annie Ross, Pamela Stephenson, Robert Vaughn and Margot Kidder. Superhero action comedy
The first two movies are the best, but who doesn’t enjoy watching Christopher Reeve in this heroic role? We will see how Henry Cavill does, but I bet he can’t beat Reeve.
13. The Big Chill (Columbia Pictures) starring Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Hurt, Kevin Kline, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly, JoBeth Williams and Don Galloway. Comedy-drama
The movie is about Baby Boomer friends coming together after the suicide of a college classmate. It was not a favorite of mine as a teen, but the all star cast work well together and make an interesting film.
14. Never Say Never Again (Warner Bros. Pictures) starring Sean Connery, Kim Basinger, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Barbara Carrera, Max von Sydow, Bernie Casey and Rowan Atkinson. Spy-action
This is Sean Connery’s last Bond film. Recognize the Bond girl? It is the first time that two Bond movies make an appearance in one year a.k.a. The “Dueling Bonds.”
15. Jaws 3-D (Universal Pictures) starring Dennis Quaid, Bess Armstrong, Lea Thompson, Louis Gossett, Jr., John Putch and Simon MacCorkindale. Horror
If you have seen a 3-D movie today and compare it with this… there is no comparison. Remember those awful glasses we had to wear? I thought I was seeing double most of the time…
16. Scarface (Universal Pictures) starring Al Pacino. Crime
Roger Ebert wrote “DePalma and his writer, Oliver Stone, have created a gallery of specific individuals, and one of the fascinations of the movie is that we aren’t watching crime-movie clichés, we’re watching people who are criminals.” He later added it to his “Great Movies” list. This is an extremely violent film. If you are into that kind of drama, then this is your movie.
17. Blue Thunder (Columbia Pictures) starring Roy Scheider, Malcolm McDowell, Warren Oates, Candy Clark and Daniel Stern. Action
I loved this movie! It has Roy Scheider, action and helicopters! Excitement at it’s best!
18. Yentl (MGM) starring Barbra Streisand, Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving. Romantic musical drama
The movie is about a Jewish girl disguising herself as a boy, so she can be religiously trained. Barbara Streisand acts and directs this film.
19. Silkwood (20th Century Fox) starring Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell, Cher, Craig T. Nelson and Fred Ward. Drama
Based on a true story, the film is a mystery that leaves you guessing right to the end.
20. Psycho II (Universal Pictures) starring Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, Robert Loggia and Meg Tilly. Psychological horror
Psycho is a stand alone movie. I do not think a sequel is necessary, but here it is…
To be continued…

Ah, Wargames … the ringtone on my work cell phone is from that movie.
🙂
That is awesome! =D
It worked. That is really cool! =D
P.S.: the words “ringtone on my work cell phone” are a link to the sound clip (I don’t see the text highlighted or underscored in my comment). A little blast from the past from General Beringer (the great Barry Corbin).
I will go check it and see if it works. Thank you for the comments. =D
