80s Earrings: When Fashion Doubled as Fishing Lures!

What is one of the major accessories that accentuates your wardrobe? Earrings! For the 80s gal, your outfit was not complete until you had the BIGGEST and BOLDEST pair on your ears. One of my FAVE 80s sites,Like Totally 80s, said it best about this fashion statement:

You know how cute Christmas ornaments look on a tree? During the 80s we thought the same would apply to our ears. Huge earrings from various costume jewelry collections were all the rage and if your earrings didn’t touch your shoulder, they weren’t big enough.

With that sentiment in mind, here is a peek into some of these awesome accessories:

Are you shocked that Madonna was one of the inspirations behind the HUGE earrings? NOT!

LARGE loops were all the rage as well.

Neon Colors were an ample part of the 80s wardrobe.

Guys wore earrings as well. Remember this guy?
Rob Lowe

How about this REBEL Rocker?

Remember when Claire gave Bender the earring at the end of The Breakfast Club? Not only did it symbolize a change in their relationship, up until this point, girls did not really give guys jewelry, that was mainly a gesture by boys.

Here are a pair of feather earrings.

Black and white jewelry was a prominent style as well.

Remember this lady? You should! She was a major fashion expert for the 80s. What show is she from?

Enamel earrings were very popular as well.

Wooden jewelry was trendy too!

Clip on earrings were worn, but not by me!!

Earrings! Earrings! They are everywhere!

If you were an 80s gal, you wore some of these earring styles. They were so much fun! I have several pairs that I kept for nostalgia’s sake. My kids have taken off with some of them, so those may be destroyed… Do you still have your earrings? What were your favorite pair? If you are having an 80s themed party, don’t forget to put on the earrings! Wear them LOUD and PROUD!

The Heinous Half Shirt!

There is one fashion statement I would be glad to never see again… The heinous half shirt! Wikipedia states that this trend goes by many names such as the cropped top, belly shirt, midriff shirt, tummy top, short shirt, and cutoff shirt.

I know you will not be surprised when I tell you that Madonna helped start this trend…

and caused quite a stir in her 1983 “Lucky Star” video!

The aerobics movement and the hit 1983 movie, Flashdance also contributed to this craze. Can you name this famous actress?

Here are more examples of this fashion faux pas:

Recognize any of these ladies?

Can you guess who these two famous people are?

What movie is this picture taken from? Can you guess the year?

Remember this famous rocker?

Are those doc martens I see with the half shirt?

This is a photo from the 90s, but it is TOTALLY a riot!

I had a blue half shirt with my name on the back of it. I thought it was so cool then… Maybe I am just old now, but I’m afraid I would look like Will Ferrell in this Saturday Night Live skit photo!! NOT happening!! I guess it’s not so bad on the ladies, but the men… I don’t think so!! What do you think? Should the cropped shirt come back or remain in the fashion archives?

Would You Put That In Your Hair?

Fashion in the 80s was very bold. It was all about color and outstanding hair! What combined these elements together was the fantastic accessories. Take a look at these:

Madonna started this hair bow style. Can you guess which movie this photo is taken from?

Remember the scrunchy? I had a bunch of these in various colors…

The banana hair clip! You couldn’t be an 80s girl without one of these…

Dyed hair and wigs were popular as well.

Remember this famous lady? What movie is this picture taken from?

This guy was famous for his top hat. Can you guess which band he is in and who he is?

Yes, those are shoestrings!

Remember these puffy bows? They were usually worn in the back of the hair, but they always made an outfit stand out!

We cannot leave out my FAVE hair accessory- The BANDANA! I wore a red one A LOT in my teen years. =D

This rocker helped make them famous! Can you guess who he is and what band he is in?

So did this one! =D

How could I possibly leave Hulk Hogan out?

It was so much fun to be an 80s teen. What can I say? BOLD is Beautiful! =D
